Mindfulness and Broken Heart Syndrome – Links between our Emotions & The Heart – Happy Valentines Day

Given it is Valentines Day coming up thought it was timely to share this interesting TED TALK looking at the links between Emotions and our Physical Heart.

The link between the physical heart and our emotions is a highly intimate one.

Find out how the record of our Emotional Life is actually written on our hearts from the evidence collected by Cardiologist Sandeep Jauhar..  He talks about how the nerves that control unconscious processes like the heartbeat, can sense distress. This can trigger a maladaptive fight / flight response, that can cause blood vessels to constrict, and an increase in Blood Pressure, resulting in damage. Syndromes such as the broken heart syndrome can cause real physical damage.

This calls for a shift in how we look after our heart and the hearts of others. It’s one of the reasons why I feel Mindfulness & Yoga Training is relevant for us all (not only for those who want to teach Yoga – but for anyone wanting to do a better job of self care or caring for others, including our kids, families and community)

During my time nursing on the Cardiac Wards, I noticed a similar link that often (if not nearly all the time) there was always a story of heart break or emotional stress from cardiac patients which further inspired my study and interest in Mindfulness.  Or sometimes known as “Heartfulness” because in a lot of Asian countries the word for Heart and Mind is linked.

Funnily enough (or not so funny at the time) I was going through a bit of heart break and noticed that after a yoga class , especially after savasana things would improve and I felt happy or more content for no good reason, not to mention my “nurses back” was improving too!.  This sparked my interest even more, to want to study the links and more so want to share the never ending benefits with others.

Thankfully the Yogis discovered links between our physicality , mentality (including our emotions) and found various ways to manage the reactivity we can often all have to the stuff going on in our mind (which can cause us to feel highly charged emotions at times)

For anyone wanting to discover more about these links and how Yoga Postures &/or Meditation / Breathing Practices can help manage stress (including emotions such as fear, anger, heartbreak, uncertainty) we explore this in our Mindfulness & Yoga Teacher Training and Personal Development Programs.  We also offer private programs and sessions.
