The Yamas & Niyamas in Yoga ~ What are they

The Yogis taught us in the Sutras about the fluctuations of the mind, known as Vrttis (this translates to whurl). Sometimes our thoughts can feel like they whirl around and come crashing in, but our Mindfulness + Yoga Practice is to notice them without reacting. The Yogis suggested 8 Limbs of Yoga to help us with this. The first two being the Yamas + Niyamas, which is the Yoga of Relationship.
The Yogis realised that if our relationship with ourselves or others was out of whack, the mind would not be at ease either.

Thankfully many great yogis gave us teachings on how we can calm down the fluctuations of the mind (i.e. can we react a little less to the crap we think about)

Over the coming weeks, we will take a look at each of the Yamas and Niyamas and how we can practice these on and off the Yoga Mat.  We also invite you along on the journey to take either a 10 Day Challenge or a 10-week Challenge (if you want to take your time to explore a little deeper) by sharing your own contemplations on how each has made a difference for you.

To get you started, below is a snapshot/summary of what each of the Yamas and Niyamas are:

YAMAS

Ahimsa ~ Non Violence

Satya ~ Truthfulness

Asteya ~ Non Stealing

Bramacharya ~ Conservation of Energy / Respect / Intimacy
