The Challenge of Ahimsa vs Satya (Non Harm vs Truth)

Ahimsa (Non Harm) + Satya (Truthfulness)

by Tammy Williams

Don’t speak your mind, speak your heart. (as best as you can today)

At times I forget Ahimsa (Non Harm) comes before Satya (Truthfulness) for a reason. Saying what’s on your mind under the banner of ‘truthfulness’ is a misunderstanding of Satya. Speaking your mind isn’t always kind without the consideration of is it timely, is it necessary…. Personally this practice gets harder and harder if I let the simple things go by the way side like getting enough sleep, eating well and honouring my body by exercising. Energy seems to get stuck or stagnant, friction builds up and before I know it my mouth is speaking exactly what’s on my mind. Which in my experience hasn’t always gone well. Being able to speak your heart takes commitment and discipline in doing simple things in life that are nourishing. Sometimes the best way to speak your heart is to sit in silence first and Listen to it. Maybe then you will hear something beyond conditions and concepts and nothing needs to be said at all. As Rumi says Close your eyes fall in love and stay there.

This ‘being Mindful (Living from your heart) is no easy task
That is why we need guidance and help from those who have been down the path
Someone who makes a vow to continue to walk it
This doesn’t mean they live perfectly or always ‘get it right’
They have come to understand the ‘suffering’ that’s caused from ‘fight and flight’
To be able to sit still when you are in this mode
Causes you to feel that your mind has no fixed abode
It reeks havoc on your heart and creates feelings of stress
Making it feel impossible for you to feel at your best
When you feel like you are jumping out of your own skin
Feeling like you are sinking and you just can’t swim
Turn to someone who has done the work and “Sat”
Who can help remind you of its meaning
Sat = Truth
