Mindfulness for your Monday :
Trying to Let Go ~
“Like a Dark Cloud Over Our Heads that takes up our headspace”
There are many things that can stop us from letting go even when we ‘know’ that’s what we need to do.
Letting Go is one of the Pillars of Mindfulness & is also explored in the Eightfold Path of Yoga. For me learning about it in theory wasn’t enough. I needed to find a balance of practices that showed me how & understand why (the Neuroscience behind why letting go can be a struggle)
As I was doing my best to “Let Go” & clear out my photos on my iPhone to “Free up S P A C E” on the infamous “Cloud”
I came across this one (featured at the top) –
“If I didn’t leave this bitterness and hatred behind I’d still be in prison”
I hold on 🙃 to reminders and words of wisdom from great teachers like Nelson Mandela to remind me of the practice of Mindfulness & Yoga (the internal Yoga!) This helps me to keep going! To stand , what I am for and put energy into that, regardless of those who take advantage of people’s innocence.
Working as a School Nurse & supporting victims of Crime, along with my own experiences of learning first hand even though we want life to be fair, safe, and full of integrity IT IS NOT.
“Letting Go” especially when your injustice triggers are fired is easier said than done, & there’s reasons.
Understanding the Neuroscience of
Why we hang on & find it hard to let helps me have more understanding & compassion for myself & others
Especially when struggling to let go of grievances of injustice!
Unresolved conflict, elevates our cortisol levels, especially situations where you have done nothing wrong! Yet feel like it’s you that is paying for it! There’s a reason we ruminate on the shit things people do even though it’s not good for us. The chemicals released in the brain bind our attention, causing us to have more rigidity in our thinking (Like a dog with a bone so to speak) making it hard to focus on something that will help us feel free!
Ironically, my experiences with injustice became the path that lead to freedom. Admittedly this isn’t ongoing or instant freedom , it’s more like pockets that over time have expanded with doing the time!
Experiencing the pain and pleasure of its relief, like being able to enjoy my life & who was walking beside me. Rather than be fighting the legal system in my head was due to the time I had been spending on the mat & meditation cushion.
This is why I’m dedicated to helping others find relief from the internal grief, that should not be theirs to bear, if like many they have been subject to various forms of Trauma
Injustice is just one example.
During our Yoga & Mindfulness training & The Mindful Mentor Program we spend time recognising the role of the amygdala, prefrontal cortex, and the stress response.
This can help us better appreciate why it takes time to let go & why the Yoga is a “practice” that requires patience, perseverance & persistency. More importantly, especially working 1:1 we can practice Trauma Aware Co Meditation that can help us work more skilfully with our grudges for the sake of our own freedom.
We are all worthy of feeling free! Especially if we have done nothing wrong!
Trauma Aware Mindfulness Mentoring & Yoga Therapy involves practices that helps us undo the knots. Often, the process of this “letting go” doesn’t happen directly on the yoga mat; rather, it unfolds in everyday moments, like walking on the beach, hearing the sound of the birds, an a-har moment of insight in the shower.
Each time we step onto the mat, we untie another knot. The yogis call these Granthis. The physical and emotional work we do on the mat or meditation cushion during Yoga NRG Trainings or the 1:1 work I support in the Mindful Mentoring helps to creates space in our minds and hearts. In that space, we find the freedom to live love & play with our whole heart. Even in a world full of injustice!
I’m worthy of this freedom
So are you !
Other than the middle finger mudra salute & the “Screw You” Mantra; to those who commit acts of harm or unjust behaviour, likewise to the systems that do not support the innocent
~ Building our own unique Mindful Toolkit is something that will support our freedom & give your mind back it’s space.
Side note dedicated to practicing A Sense of Humour
Although we may not be able to find ways to make space on iCloud without buying another iphone
There are ways not to overload the system of your heart 💝
